It’s flag time

So it’s almost time for Glastonbury, and it even looks like it might not rain for five days like it did last year.  The key accessory for any Glastonbury trip – except for wellies and maybe fancy dress outfit – has to be a flag.  So the cast and crew of Neoco were set a challenge to design a flag for me to use for this year’s festival.

The brief was simple – it needs to be bright, and it needs to be easy to make (only one week left now).  I’m still wondering why all the entries are very camp.

The winner – chosen mainly due to simplicity to make – is LBs entry, with a slight tweak to the background colour:

Second place was Benn’s inspired effort - although perhaps slightly too effeminate for my liking:

The other entries are shown below:

According to the BBC, sales of smart phones are predicted to overtake those of laptops within the next 18 months, “as the mobile phone completes its transition from voice communications device to multimedia computer”.

And I can’t see any reason why not, as companies like Nokia, Samsung and Motorola have finally began to convince us that the idea of having a multimedia computer in your pocket, is possible.

“Converged devices are always with you and always connected,” said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Nokia chief executive at last week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.  Nokia predict that they will sell 35 million GPS-enabled phones this year, as personal navigation becomes the latest feature to be assimilated into the mobile phone.

Nigel Clifford, chief executive of Symbian, said: “All of those single use devices - MP3 players, digital camera, GPS - are collapsing onto the phone. We are going past the point where this was a phone with a few other things”.

MySpace signs deal to put its shows on TV

MySpace has signed a deal, to air it’s shows such as Quarterlife, Roommates and Special Delivery on screens outside the US. The deal covers DVDs and merchandise but MySpace will retain all net rights to its programmes.  Despite bad figures for NBC’s broadcast of MySpace’s “Quarterlife” in February, MySpace are clearly having another attempt at finding an audience for its programmes beyond the internet.

As expected, they’ve also just entered a partnership with Universal Music Group, Sony BMG and Warner Music Group, which will offer music services on MySpace, a site that’s been known as a music community ever since all the sensible people fled to Facebook in 2007. Enhancing the MySpace Music platform already in place, they’ll offer DRM-free digital downloads, ad-supported audio and video streaming, a mobile store plus plenty of other knick knacks…

Users will be given tools to personalise their profiles even more (uh oh…) by creating playlists and easy-music searches. Artists signed up to MySpace Music can offer the users digital downloads, mobile ringtones, wallpapers and text messages regarding tours and the like, plus sell concert tickets and other merchandise.
