One Flash player to rule them all

A great article over at Venture Beat talking about Adobe’s plans to develop an Open Standards Flash Player for use across all digital media channels. This is a great development as by dropping certain license fees it ensures greater take up, which makes it easier to deliver brand experiences coherently across media channels. Shame there is still no news of a decent Flash player on the iPhone but I guess we can live in hope.

“Just in case you think Adobe’s Flash Player (which powers YouTube and an enormous number of other sites) isn’t ubiquitous enough, Adobe is pushing for even greater adoption from developers and designers. Through an initiative the company is calling the Open Screen Project, Adobe will lift a number of restrictions on Flash in the hopes creating even greater usage, especially on web-enabled devices.”

[NSFW] South Park takes on You Tube!

South Park does it again… This time they attack the You Tube and viral video stars and the fake (theoretical) dollar values associated with them. Funny episode but only if you know your stuff… but surely everyone has been sent that bloody gopher on Facebook, right?

Enjoy. Oh and just to be clear, this is definitely NSFW - unless you are at a cool place like ours :-D

Hello to all fellow work experience student out there, I’m half way through my placement with Neoco, and thoroughly enjoying it.

Everyone here has absolutely great fun to work with and accepted me into the team straight away, so I never felt like a ‘noobie’! (except when I made the Teas and Coffees!)

Here are a couple of links that got me through a tough couple of minutes when i wasn’t doing anything.

I hope you are looking forward to 29th February when Semi-Pro is released as much as I am, good to see Will Ferrell back to form with another ‘Ron Burgundy-esque’ character. enjoy.

This is the end of my short and sweet blog, for all the potential employers out there be sure to catch the UCCA graduate exhibition this year… particularly the Graphic Design Dept. …and particularly the work with my name on it!

cheers, Kyle.

You Tube finally ready to make serious cash (for Google)

picture-6.png

It wasn’t that long ago that Google won over the internet (and billions of dollars) by stripping out all the clutter for the simple search box and results. Well, now it seems like it has slowly worked to bring it all back. Not only is your regular search now stuffed with sponsored ad goodness but now you’re going to get a lot of video too.

Google took a while to introduce AdSense options for its YouTube acquisition over a year ago, but when it finally did come out with AdSense for YouTube clips, it worked with a select group of advertisers and publishers. Now, Google is finally rolling out a fuller, more inclusive AdSense service for use with videos, which should eventually be found here, though the site doesn’t seem to be available to the public just yet.

As NewTeeVee notes, Google has already signed some video advertising companies to work on this larger platform, including YuMe and Tremor Media. There are also a slew of video networks that have also signed on to be a part of this fuller AdSense network, including ExpertVillage, MyDamnChannel, and Revver to name a few. What’s that mean for the competitive methods for the likes of Revver and its new parent company Live Universe? As we’ve seen from the company’s other video network and YouTube rival LiveVideo, the marketing strategy of Greenspan is often to take a YouTube feature and make it better or more usable.

In the end, that shouldn’t make much of a difference for participating in the video version of AdSense: Google has an extensive network for advertisers and publishers to tall take advantage of, and nearly every site out there seems to have no problem signing on for text ads that appear in one’s sidebars. After tweaking its monetization efforts for YouTube a few times in the past year, it looks like Google is finally comfortable with a method of advertising that just about everybody will sign on board to participate.

And perhaps Google’s even had time to sit back and observe the video advertising methods of others in the industry, including VideoEgg? Earlier this week, VideoEgg announced a new method for its video advertisements, which aren’t revolutionary in execution but are quite novel in terms of how the ads are bought and measured. Shifting to an engagement method of charging for interactive video ads, VideoEgg is experimenting with a type of metric that is being considered in various ways across other online advertising campaigns. This is evident in the type of behavioral advertising we’re seeing emerge with widget ads and other forms of online advertising.

Overlay.tv comes to a TV near you

Not quite as slick as the IKEA sequence from the movie Fight Club but it shows we’re getting there. Overlay.tv is a new start-up with a great infomercial viral movie (see below), that enables users to overlay content on top of video. This content can be just for fun and games or it can actually link to other pages - ideal for one-click purchase of some shoes in the new Sex and the City film!

OK, so it’s a few steps from movies as currently it only enables video streams from popular video sharing sites like YouTube, MySpace TV, Google Video, Yahoo! Video, and College Humor but that’s pretty impressive to start with (although similar to Ooyala).

Nice, but what about the retailers? Well, they’ve already signed up over 600 including Amazon, iTunes and Wal-Mart. Add in the fact it works in both IE and FireFox (sorry no Safari, Apple peeps) and that users can even turn off overlays means this is one exciting piece of tech. If only it was running on the M&S site that we mentioned a few days ago…
